Die Lösung der Suchmaschinen im Netz lagerbestand in komplexeren Algorithmen beim Rang, die Punkte beinhalteten, die von Webmastern nicht oder nur schwer lenkbar waren. Larry Page und Sergey Brin konstruierten mit „Backrub“ – dem Stammvater von Google – eine Anlaufstelle, die auf einem mathematischen Algorithmus basierte, der mit Hilfe der Verlinkungsstruktur Internetseiten gewichtete und dies in den Rankingalgorithmus einfluss besitzen ließ.
